The story
Johanniter was crossed at the Freiburg state viticulture institute in 1968 by Johannes Zimmermann, with Riesling as one parent and the Freiburg seedling 589-54 as the other. Like the other Freiburg PIWIs it was bred to resist disease in cool, wet climates. In Poland it has become a staple, grown in Lower Silesia among other places.
The Riesling parent shows. The wine is firm and clean: citrus, green apple, a mineral line and lively acidity. It is usually drier and quieter than Solaris.
