skin-contact capable · vinifera

Origin
Burgundy, France (Colour mutation of Pinot Noir)
Typical winemaking
steel or older oak; pressed straight or left on skins

The story

Pinot Gris is a grey-skinned colour mutation of Pinot Noir, from Burgundy. It has collected names across Central Europe: Ruländer and Grauburgunder in German, Rulandské šedé in Czechia, Szürkebarát in Hungary, Sivi pinot in Slovenia.

Its coloured skins give the winemaker a choice. Pressed quickly, it makes a round, textured white: pear, almond, a little smoke, moderate acidity. Left on its skins, it turns copper and gains a light tannic grip. Both styles usually carry more weight than most whites on the road.
